Public Websites

There are two public urls that map to our wiki:

Why Advertising: It is CodeHaus policy (and fund raising) - and we are guests on their system. By creating our own format we have avoided adds on our normal wiki views, not sure if we should be doing that - but we are.

We also have several other public pages:

Confluence

Confluence, the wiki software that powers this website (hosted by Codehaus), has been used since March 2004 to allow anyone (developers and users) to create and update geotools documentation. It is hoped (and appears true) that a collaborative documentation effort will create a resource for the geotools community that no group of geotools developers could create on their own.

We have three spaces:

  • GeoTools Space - Home
  • Users Guide Space - Home
  • Developers Guide Space - Home

Getting Edit Permission

Because of spammers our procedure to get read/write access to the wiki has gotten a tad annoying. It is documented at the bottom of our home page:

In brief:

  1. Create an account for confluence: http://docs.codehaus.org/signup.action
  2. Create an account for codehaus: http://xircles.codehaus.org/signup
  3. Go to your personal details page: http://xircles.codehaus.org/my/details
    • Use the form to fill in your Confluence Username from step one
  4. http://xircles.codehaus.org/projects/geotools
  5. Go to the GeoTools project page: http://xircles.codehaus.org/projects/geotools
    • And click on Apply to join as a developer
  6. Wait for a GeoTools Project Management Committee Member to grant you permission

Once you have an account, you just need to login and click on the edit button to modify a page.

Wiki Pages

Confluence uses a simple markup language, and a quick reference is given on the right side of pages you are editing. One way to start contributing to the wiki documentation is to fix mistakes, clarify confusing content or by contributing to the documentation for areas of the GeoTools code base you are familiar with.

The following are some useful resources for editing the wiki:

Wiki Comments

The wiki also allows people to leave comments on the pages with feedback and/or ideas for improving the content. This may only be done if you are logged.

Since it is difficult to carry on a conversation in the comments, it best to only use them to give feedback about the wiki pages: questions about using the geotools library should be directed to the geotools-gt2-users mailing list.
