MapPane serves as an example of a simple Swing widget that can display a map, and provide limited interaction. It is able to function with a varity of GeoTools renderers and offers a great starting place for your own applications.

Depending on your needs you may find uDig more suitable as it offers a GIS Application, rather then just a widget, as a starting point.
