How to Create a New Subversion Repository

The following instructions will create a repository called FOO for the project called FOO. The example assumes the user has root privileges via sudo on beaver.codehaus.org:

  1. Be sure that the project FOO has already been created. If not, create the project using [HAUS:newproject].
  2. Create the Subversion repository in /home/projects/FOO/scm with the following command: 
    sudo svnadmin create /home/projects/FOO/scm
  3. Create a new group (or use an existing group) for the new repository (if you used the project creation tool, the group is automatically created). This group of users will have read-write access to the project. Add the apache user to the group if ViewCVS access or anonymous svnserve access is desired. In the current version of ViewCVS, read-write access is required in order to provide a web-based interface to the repository.
  4. Change the permissions on the new repository by following the instructions in How to Configure the Permissions in a Subversion Repository
  5. Configure the repository to send commit emails. Please see How to Send Subversion Commit Logs to Email.
  6. Enable ViewCVS access for the repository and enable automatic backups for repository by creating a symlink in the /svnroot directory: 
     
sudo ln -s /home/projects/FOO/scm /svnroot/FOO
  7. It is strongly recommended that the project committers are sent a link to How to Organize a Subversion Repository.
