The name "swaf" originally was the accronym of Simple Web Application Framework. The name was also chosen because it is approximately pronounced like the french word "soif", which means "thirst", which seemed funny.
The accronym doesn't quite match reality anymore, for a number of reasons - mostly because I discovered and started using webwork, amongst other things.
SWAF needs a new name -> Settled on Berkano : See HAUS-815@jira
I should dig my archives, I have a number of documents explaining the why's and what's of swaf ideas, which are probably still valid in a way or another
Swaf now mostly aggregates a number of small projects - some of them very small - that can form useful parts of a java based web application.
