Geotools is an open source Java GIS toolkit for developing standards compliant solutions. It provides an implementation of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) specifications as they are developed. Geotools maintains an open development process, with public collaboration on new ideas . Project communication is open to all , and we welcome new contributions . If you are a first time user, the getting started page in the users guide is a good place to begin learning about Geotools. It's been a big week for GeoTools releases, with both 2.6-RC1 and 2.5.8 hitting the streets.
GeoTools 2.5.8 has seen a number of changes including:
Improvements Shapefile locking
Various fixes to ImageMosaic stability
Support for JDBC aggregate functions

GeoTools 2.6 has finally reached release candidacy, with the resolution of a few key issues, including:
Solving a crash when reading ECW files

Useful references for GeoTools users
There is now a GeoTools CiteULike library for useful papers, articles and other references relating to geo-spatial applications and computational geometry.
